September 8th is International Literacy Day.
To quote a letter to the editor submitted to our local paper by Yvonne Appiah, executive director for CODE - Canadian Organization for Development through Education, "More than 100 million children have no access to school. This is the equivalent to all the primary school children in Europe and North America combined. And 875 million adults, most of them women, cannot read or write."
She goes on to say, "Reading and writing isn't a luxury. It's a weapon against poverty, hunger and disease."
Two endeavors that support literacy are Project Love and the Make Poverty History Campaign.
